Royal Wood Atelier Brings Intangible Cultural Heritage to Communities, Artisan Skills Illuminate Residents' Cultural Lives

2025.03.19

— A Record of Jinjialing Sub-district's 2025 "ICH in Communities" Series

In March 2025, Royal Wood Atelier launched the "Wood as a Medium, Conveying Cultural Warmth" series in multiple communities of Jinjialing Sub-district. Through featured courses like Health-Preserving Peach Wood Comb, Hanging Flower Gate of the Taoist Taiqing Palace, Three-Piece Luban Lock, Traditional Chinese Wooden Chopsticks, and Party Emblem Pen Holder, traditional woodcraft was revitalized, offering residents unique cultural experiences.

Artisan Legacy: ICH Skills Enter Homes

From March 5th to 26th, Royal Wood Atelier successively visited communities including Luxin Changchun, Wangjiacun, Yidu, Huidu, Jinyuan, Zhongjiagou, Dadong, and Wushan to conduct traditional woodcraft instruction.

In the Health-Preserving Peach Wood Comb course, residents learned processes like material selection, sanding, and carving, crafting practical and culturally rich peach wood combs with their own hands. "I’d only seen these traditional crafts in museums before; I never thought I could experience making one myself," said Ms. Zhang, a resident of Luxin Changchun Community. "Making the peach wood comb was not only fun but also taught me about traditional culture. Activities like this are very meaningful."

The Three-Piece Luban Lock course allowed participants to appreciate the wisdom of ancient artisans through fun assembly. The Hanging Flower Gate of the Taiqing Palace course meticulously restored ancient techniques, where "every carving tells the depth of Taoist culture, and every beam carries the wisdom of traditional architecture."

All Ages Welcome: Traditional Culture Gains New Vitality

The activities attracted residents of all ages. Seniors relived traditional memories through woodcraft, while younger participants cultivated an interest in ICH through hands-on practice. The Three-Piece Luban Lock course in Huidu Community was particularly popular among seniors, who learned about traditional mortise-and-tenon structures through puzzle assembly – combining education with enjoyment.

The head of Royal Wood Atelier explained, "We specifically designed a curriculum system suitable for modern learners. It preserves the essence of traditional craftsmanship while incorporating modern aesthetic elements, bringing ICH skills closer to contemporary life."

Community Collaboration: Building a Cultural Sharing Platform

This event received strong support from Jinjialing Sub-district. Through a collaborative community model, it built an excellent platform for ICH transmission. Communities actively organized resident participation and provided venues and other support, creating a beneficial interaction described as "government builds the stage, enterprises perform the opera, and residents reap the benefits" in this cultural initiative.

Looking Ahead: Continuously Promoting ICH Transmission

Royal Wood Atelier plans to establish a long-term cooperation mechanism with Jinjialing Sub-district, offering regular ICH courses and training community inheritors. Simultaneously, it will develop more culturally creative products suited for modern life, enabling traditional craftsmanship to truly enter people’s daily lives.

"ICH transmission requires the joint participation of all sectors of society," stated the head of Royal Wood Atelier. "We will continue to go deep into communities, allowing more people to understand, appreciate, and pass on these precious cultural treasures."
